I've been doing my best to try to meet people outside of the 45 folks on this trip with me. While it was tricky to do so, I met Keilah at the dining hall of the place we're currently staying. She's a staff member for another trip.
Keilah grew up in San Diego and then moved to Chicago (Chicago!) to go to UIC to study sociology and criminology. Needless to say, as a sociology person she was so intrigued by this project.
She's currently a teacher's assistant for a special ed school while going to grad school for special ed. She talked about the challenges of working with those students, but that it's quite rewarding.
My sister got her Masters in Special Education and is now teaching in a middle school. As stressful as it is, and as much work as it involves, she loves it.
