This is really starting to get interesting. Only day 4 and I was worried I wasn't going to meet someone today! It was a little after 10pm and I was on my way home from midtown west - since I decided I didn't want the Thai delivery man to be my friend of the day, I popped into Mariella Pizza on 8th Avenue just to see if I'd have any luck. Sure enough, I met my new friend Maggie D!
Maggie had just finished a quick bite with her friends Maureen (studying to be a physical therapist) and Connor (who works in wealth management) when I came by to say hello. I was worried I might be keeping them, but they mentioned they were supposed to meet up with other friends two hours ago, so I might as well have a seat and hang out!
Maggie is in town from Chicago (I was so excited to tell her that I went to school there, too) where she is in grad school for psychology. While she's originally from upstate New York, the ONLY two other times she'd been to New York CITY was to visit her friend Maureen! (Maureen lives on Staten Island... I asked her if she needed her passport.) Connor lives ABOVE the restaurant we were in... I should have asked him if it always smells like garlic knots. Maureen and Connor have a terrific meet-cute! They were talking at a bar in the village and it turned out that Marueen's uncle is Connor's dad's best friend! Small world!
What was so great about today's meeting is that we actually hung out for a bit. By the time we were saying goodbye and all leaving the restaurant together, about 45 minutes had gone by! I was coming from a game night and had Cards Against Humanity with me -- we didn't play, but talked about some of our favorite cards (Connor had never played before) and I mentioned that some are hysterically outlandish while others are just so simple... one of my favorites is "A Bop-It" -- THAT started a conversation about awesome 90s toys and games.
Safe travels back to Chicago, Maggie! And if I don't see you next time I'm there, I'm glad to know you're often in New York for New Years!
